First Time Voters

Today’s newspapers report that 31.5% of the Indians are in age group of 18 to 35 years as per Census of India report released on Friday, 6th September 2013. Election Commission estimates 725 million voters in the country. This would mean about 150 million first time voters – approximately 20% of the total voters.

Analysis of about 82.45 million sample voters from 8 states/union territories shows the following percent of voters in the age group of 18 to 25, majority of who would be first time voters except in states where elections were held recently:

YoungVoters

West Bengal has the lowest voter count in this age group. Five out of eight states show lower than expected percentage of voters in the age group.

More involved study of age distribution can help EC and CEOs in voter registration drive strategies.
