When I meet people in various gatherings or on the road, many acquaintances tell me, “You should come home sometime.” However, before I can ask their phone number, address, date and time I was invited or requested or ordered to visit, they change the topic or start telling someone else “you should come home sometime.” Often, they do not know even my name and I do not know theirs. If I know them a little better and ask if we could schedule this visit, “I am always free (or busy.) Come any time, any day, but check if I am free.” At times, if I visit taking an invitation seriously, the host would not be at home.
We all have such an invitation today, published in the newspapers.
“25th January marks the foundation day of the Election Commission of India which is celebrated as National Voters Day. All are cordially invited to the programme being celebrated at Town Hall at Bangalore and all Polling Stations, Taluk and District Headquarters on 25th January, 2013.”
I would like to attend these functions. What is the time of celebrations at Town Hall? Should the interested parties call up CEO’s office and find out the details?
Karnataka has more than 28,000 polling booths. Do we have this celebration in all these places? What time will they hold these functions? Shall we get separate invitations from our polling stations? Where do we find out the details, being eager guests, “we the citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy”?
We discussed the poor quality of corporate communication in a previous post. An advertisement is mass communication, reaching lakhs of people. If the copy is imprecise and misleading, the reader would consider it to be insincere. A bad advertisement can do even more harm than a bad mass mail.
